The franc in Belgium was introduced in 1832 after Belgium gained independence from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was a currency based on the decimal system, which meant that 1 franc was divided into 100 centimes. Belgium went through monetary reforms that were aimed at stabilizing the economy and currency. On January 1, 1999, the euro was introduced as an electronic currency, and the Belgian franc was used in parallel until January 1, 2002, when the euro entered circulation in the form of banknotes and coins. At the end of the existence of the Belgian franc, banknotes were in circulation in denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 10,000 francs, the design of the banknotes often referred to important Belgian historical figures, e.g. King Albert I, King Baudouin I, or scientists and artists like Adolphe Quetelet and James Ensor. The currency of Belgium was one of the key currencies in Western Europe, being a highly industrialized and centrally located country, it played an important role in international trade and finance.
