The Belgian franc was introduced in 1832 after Belgium gained independence from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was a decimal currency, meaning 1 franc was divided into 100 centimes. Belgium underwent monetary reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and the currency. On January 1, 1999, the euro was introduced as an electronic currency, and the Belgian franc was used alongside it until January 1, 2002, when euro banknotes and coins entered circulation. Towards the end of its existence, Belgian franc banknotes were issued in denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 10,000 francs. Banknote designs often featured important Belgian historical figures such as King Albert I, King Baudouin I, as well as scientists and artists like Adolphe Quetelet and James Ensor. As one of the key currencies in Western Europe, Belgium’s currency played a significant role in international trade and finance due to the country's strong industrial base and central location.
