The official currency of Bolivia, introduced in 1987 after a period of hyperinflation that affected the country during the 1980s. The new currency replaced the former Bolivian peso, stabilizing the financial system and restoring confidence in the economy. The name “boliviano” comes from Simón Bolívar – the national hero of South America and leader of the independence movements. 1 BOB is divided into 100 centavos – coins in circulation range from 10 centavos to 5 bolivianos, and banknotes from 10 to 200 bolivianos. The banknotes feature portraits of national heroes, cultural motifs, and landscapes showcasing Bolivia’s geographic diversity – from the Andes to the Amazon rainforest.
