The official currency of Bosnia is relatively young, introduced after the war in Bosnia in the 1990s as part of peace agreements and economic reconstruction. Bosnia and Herzegovina uses a currency board system, which requires the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina to maintain foreign exchange reserves covering 100% of the issued BAM value, mainly in euros. Banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 marks. It is worth noting that Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of two main administrative units, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska, and banknotes have different designs depending on the region.
