The official currency of Bosnia is relatively young, introduced after the war in Bosnia in the 1990s as part of peace agreements and economic reconstruction. Bosnia and Herzegovina uses a currency board system, which requires the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina to maintain foreign exchange reserves covering 100% of the issued BAM value, mainly in euros.
