The official currency of Denmark, as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands, the Danish krone is a stable currency linked to the euro within the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II). Banknotes are issued by Danmarks Nationalbank – the Danish National Bank. The exchange rate of the Danish krone fluctuates depending on various economic, political, and market factors but is kept stable in relation to the euro. It was introduced in 1875, replacing the rigsdaler as part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union. Although the union dissolved in 1914, Denmark retained the name “krone” for its currency.
