The Estonian kroon was the official currency of Estonia until adopting the euro in 2011. It was first introduced in 1928, replacing the Estonian mark. After Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940, the kroon was replaced by the Soviet ruble. The Estonian kroon was reinstated in June 1992 after Estonia regained independence in 1991. It was issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 kroons – banknotes featured important figures and events from Estonia's history.
