The official currency of Georgia was introduced in 1995, replacing the previous currency called the kuponi. Banknotes are issued by the National Bank of Georgia – Sakartvelos Erovnuli Banki. The currency was introduced on October 2, 1995, as part of an economic stabilization program following the collapse of the Soviet Union and a period of hyperinflation that occurred after Georgia regained independence. The National Bank of Georgia conducts monetary policy aimed at maintaining the stability of the lari and controlling inflation.
