It is the third largest trading currency in the world after the US dollar and it is not difficult to guess the euro. The yen symbol is ¥ and the ISO code is JPY. Here are some key facts about the Japanese yen. It was introduced in 1871 as part of the Meiji reforms aimed at modernizing the Japanese economy and initially the yen was based on the gold-silver system, but after World War II Japan adopted the Bretton Woods system and then it became a freely convertible currency. The yen plays a key role in the global economy as one of the most important reserve currencies, while Japan is one of the worlds largest exporters and the countrys currency is widely accepted in international transactions - especially in Asia. The yen exchange rate in exchange offices and, consequently, on the currency exchange, is floating, which means that its value changes depending on market forces of demand and supply. Interestingly, in Japanese society there is a tradition of giving new banknotes as gifts during special occasions, such as weddings or the New Year.
