The official currency of Moldova, introduced in 1993 to replace the temporary Moldovan coupons following the country’s independence in 1991. The name comes from the Romanian word for lion. One leu is divided into 100 bani. The currency is issued by the National Bank of Moldova – Banca Națională a Moldovei. Moldovan leu banknotes feature portraits of historical rulers such as Stephen the Great, as well as architectural and national motifs.
