The official currency used on the island of Jersey, which is one of the Channel Islands. Like other currencies on the Island, it is closely pegged to the pound sterling and has a fixed one-to-one exchange rate against it. Jersey issues its own banknotes and coins, which have different designs to those issued by the Bank of England. Banknotes and coins depict local symbols, historical figures and landscapes associated with the island. Outside the island of Jersey, Jersey pound notes may not be accepted, although they are theoretically of equal value to the pound sterling. For this reason, tourists often exchange Jersey pounds for pounds sterling before leaving the island. Jerseys tradition of issuing its own currency dates back to the 19th century. The island, being a British Crown dependency, has autonomy in many matters, including issuing its own money.
