The official currency of Russia and two internationally unrecognized republics: Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Russias currency has a long history dating back to the 13th century when it was a unit of silver. The name comes from the Russian word рубить - to chop meaning to cut - because silver was cut into pieces. After the revolution in 1917, the ruble became the currency of the USSR. During the Soviet period, the ruble went through many monetary reforms, including redenomination. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia adopted a new ruble in 1993 to replace the Soviet ruble. Redenomination was carried out in 1998 to stabilize the economy. The ruble exchange rate is variable and may fluctuate due to economic, political factors and international sanctions. The value of the ruble may also depend on the prices of natural raw materials, such as crude oil, the export of which is an important element of the Russian economy. In recent years, Russia has been researching the introduction of a digital ruble as part of the global trend towards digitalization of currencies.
