The official currency of Russia and two internationally unrecognized republics: Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the ruble has a long history dating back to the 13th century, when it was a silver unit. The name comes from the Russian word "рубить" – "to chop," referring to silver being cut into pieces. After the 1917 revolution, the ruble became the currency of the USSR, undergoing multiple monetary reforms, including redenomination. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia introduced a new ruble in 1993 to replace the Soviet ruble. In 1998, a redenomination was carried out to stabilize the economy. The ruble exchange rate is variable and may fluctuate due to economic, political, and international sanctions factors. Its value may also depend on natural resource prices, such as oil, a key element of the Russian economy. In recent years, Russia has explored introducing a digital ruble as part of the global trend towards digitalization.
