It was the official currency of Slovakia before adopting the euro. It was introduced on February 8, 1993, after the division of Czechoslovakia into two independent states: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It replaced the Czechoslovak koruna as Slovakia's national currency. On January 1, 2009, the euro replaced the Slovak koruna as the official currency.
